Stonehurst
A perfect day in pictures (see them all in the pdf version)
Once again SWBANS members were treated to the fine hospitality of Donna and
Howard Ray at their seaside home in Stonehurst. This perfect paddling paradise
was matched by an equally perfect day of light warm winds and sparkling sunshine
on the water.
The following pictures are worth more then a thousand words, so I will let them
tell the story. Photos are by Janet Gates-Robart and Ryerson Clark.
TO TOP +
Those of you have been members for the past few years will remember photos every now and then in The Boatshed of the great strip canoe Ross Pottie has been building. At one point it even made the cover! As you can see by the photos (see pdf version) it is now finished, and what a beauty!
This note from Howard
Ray.
Work on the still unnamed Eun Mara progresses. As you can see from the photo,
the cabin and decks are complete (although the side and stern decks are not
installed) and the cockpit is almost done. The companionway and hatch need to
be finished and the tabernacle for the main mast has to be built. After that,
lots of fairing, finishing and trim, build the rudder and then make 8 spars
- yes, 8 - 3 each for the gaff rigged main and mizzen, plus bowsprit and boomkin.
Oh, and did I mention the 440 pound hunk of lead that has to be somehow moved
under the boat and up into the keel? If the building doesn't blow away this
winter, she should be ready for a spring launch, which definitely sounds like
a SWBANS event to me!

Wet and
Wild
With Jose and Gerry, story by Jose Gladwin
On August 14, despite forecasts of rain and slightly windy conditions, 9 people
gathered at Jose and Gerry's place for a pre- "wet and wild" coffee.
We were going to participate in a kayak rescue workshop at Lumsden Pond (this
is really a small lake).
By one o'clock we figured that all that were planning to come were here, so
down the road we went. "What a convoy -- quite striking", according
to participant, Ken Lawrence. He'd been waiting at the lake for us and thought
maybe he had the wrong place or time, but was quickly reassured when he met
our train of vehicles led by a motorcycle, all carrying kayaks on rooves or
trailers. No doubt about the fact that this was the right bunch.
For the first five minutes it showered a bit, but that didn't bother us, kayaks
were unloaded in no time and everyone paddled around. The lake was ours, only
two other swimmers were here on this beautiful day.
Ulli and kayaker friend, Mina led the group in teaching us the various theories
and techniques involved in getting back into the kayak after being dumped out.
We all tried the assisted rescue first. Although some of us were hesitant about
tipping ourselves over, we all managed to get back in using this method. I had
a bit of a hard time myself, some of which I blamed on being out of shape, there's
muscles there in the upper body that I didn't know existed.
Then we went on to self-rescue methods with lots of help from our leaders. Some of the participants really took advantage of this workshop and played (worked) for close to two hours. All in all this was a very valuable learning situation; the participants all thanked Ulli and Mina profusely before heading off to their various Saturday night suppers, barbecues and parties.
Newsletter Notes and
Other House Keeping Stuff
I hope you enjoy this issue of the Newsletter. Fall is a busy time for most
of us. Getting kids back in school, pulling and preparing boats for the winter
etc.. This issue does lack membership input as in the past so there isn't much
to read. With a few months warning (hint hint) there could be many short stories
of adventures from this past summer for the January issue.
SWBANS had a pretty busy early fall for messaboats, shown in this issue is Stonehurst
at it's best. We had a great turnout for Cole Harbour and a near perfect day
for that also. There will be a story and photographs in the January issue to
help boost those spirits when the days are short and the boats buried under
a foot of snow.
Winter events are being planned, I just have to get word from our hosts as to
dates and details and these will be listed in the next Newsletter. Should any
event happen
"spur of the moment"
I'll post it to your email.
Take care, Ryerson
